After his first appearance at HIFA Festival in 2011 with the Watsamba M’Diou Project, Matchume Zango returns to Harare, this time with his own band and to release his debut album “Wata M’Cande”.

Cândido Salomão Zango, also known as “Matchume,” has dedicated himself to Mozambican traditional music and dance since the age of six. He is currently regarded as one of the new masters of the timbila. His parents and grandparents are originally from Zavala, Inhambane Province, which is the center of Mozambique’s Timbila tradition. Inspired by this long and passionate tradition of music and percussion, Matchume began to play, study music and produce traditional instruments such as Mbira, Xitende and djembe drums.

The band consists of three musicians from three different countries;

Maputo-based Djibra Moussa joined Matchume’s traditional band Timbila Muzimba some 15 years ago and plays drums on the 2018 debut album Wata M’Cande

Frank Tatenda Mavhimira is a young Zimbabwean guitarist who grew up in a town called Chitungwiza just out of Harare. He started to play professionally in 2008 with Rute Mbangwa and has since worked with different artists as a session guitarist namely Prudence Katomene , Hope Masike, Alexio Kawara amongst others.

He has also played at different festivals and events in Denmark, Algeria, Uganda, Turkey and many places in Southern Africa.

Swiss-born Violinist and Bass player Matthias Abächerli has gained experience during his work in Madagascar, Mozambique and South Africa. Together with Robert Trunz (MELT 2000) they have put together 4 major tours with a crowd of musicians from Europe and Southern Africa. Matthias is a member of both Madala Kunene and Sazi Dlamini’s bands.
