Vocalist/composer Franziska Baumann and pianist/composer Christoph Baumann, will launch their new CD, Duo Interzones with a tour of South Africa in February 2017. The album includes collaborations with artists such as Pierre-Henri Wicomb, bass player Carlo Mombelli and the Xhosa singers Bongeka Qhanga, Nomapostile Nyiki and Zinzi Nogavu and will be joining them on tour.

The album is described as maintaining “a dusted and experimental use of different styles beyond crossover with the sonic expansion through live electronics, songs and composed fragments.’ The pair has for a long time collaborated in offering mainly improvised music.

The concerts will take place at the Purpur Festival in Cape Town, at The Orbit in Johannesburg, and they will be conducting lectures at the University of Fort Hare, the University of Cape Town and the University of Stellenbosch.

Christoph grew up with western classical music and is also deeply rooted in the percussive idioms of contemporary jazz and Afro-Cuban music. He teaches at the Music Universities of Lucerne and Bern and has performed internationally with a big variety of soloists and ensembles.

Franziska is probably one of the most exciting and changeable vocalists in Switzerland and explores the human voice as a multi-faceted instrument expanding traditional boundaries. The glottal clicks and a variety of unique microtonal, timbre-modifying and percussive vocal techniques have become her “signature sound”. As a composer her repertoire is diverse and includes commissions for electroacoustic and improvised projects to Music Theatre, large-scale site-specific sound environments and installations.
