Artist

Ute Sengebusch & Jonas Gillmann

South Africa | Performance Art

October - December — Performance Art

GUESTROOM is an analogue chatroom for the 21st century.  Artists generate knowledge and skills, triggered by guest-artist’s interventions. With this format of collective thinking, their aim is to sharpen the awareness of thinking processes and dialogue. Creators Ute Sengebusch and Jonas Gillmann will be on residency in South Africa from October to December.

The artists will spend time in Johannesburg working at the Centre for the Less Good Idea, in Durban with Twist Theatre and presenting at KZNSA ‘Guestroom’ at KZNSA Gallery, and in Cape Town with the Unmute ArtsAbility company, and presenting ‘Guestroom’ at the Unmute ArtsAbility festival.

Ute Sengebusch graduated in 2007 at the University for Music and Theatre Zurich (Switzerland).  She works as director, actress, studio speaker and as lecturer at the University for Music and Drama in Stuttgart (Germany) and in the field of communication of art. Besides other grants and awards, she was the winner of the cultural promotion award Basel-Stadt in 2015 for her work with Firma für Zwischenbereiche and got nominated for the ZKB award at Zürcher Theaterspektakel.  Her works have been presented at Zürcher Theaterspektakel, ROXY Birsfelden, Basel; Schauspielhaus, Zürich; Bregenzer Festspiele, Dschungel, Wien, and other venues.  In her pieces she deals with different aspects of migration in society and fathoms narration as form and strategy. She is especially interested in the dialogue of documentary and fictional material, and in theatre as space for encounter and dialogue.

Jonas Gillmann works as a freelance dramaturg in Basel and realises projects on the intersection of the dramatic and visual arts. His work is presented in theatre contexts as well as in visual arts contexts, including Festival Wildwuchs, ROXY Birsfelden, exhibition space Klingental, Museum, all Basel;  Strauhof, Zurich; Les Journées Tac Tac Tac, Lausanne.  As a dramaturg he works with e.g. Marcel Schwald, Ute Sengebusch, Alessandro Schittarella, Rebecca Weingartner, Art Space Villa Renata, and Künstlerinnenkollektiv Marsie.  Jonas Gillmann studied theatre and dance sciences and philosophy at the universities of Bern and Basel. He has been actively involved in the association of independent theatre creators sine 2015.
