Talya Lubinsky

Switzerland | Visual Arts, Multi-Disciplinary

June - July | Basel — Visual Arts, Multi-Disciplinary

Talya Lubinsky,  an artist based in Johannesburg, will be in Basel on a research residency for a month during June/July.

She completed her Masters dissertation on the politics of mess and order as strategies of display at the University of Witwatersrand. She produced the inaugural exhibition, titled, “If we burn, there is ash”, at the Wits Anthropology Museum in Johannesburg in September 2016. Her practice is invested in the poetic potentials to be found in archives of violent histories. Both the content and materiality of these archives are used as generative grounds for artistic production.

The aim of the residency is engage in artistic research at the Basler Afrika Bibliographien (BAB) in the archives of Ruth Weiss, housed at the institution. Weiss is a German Jew who fled Nazi Germany in 1936, relocating to South Africa. She later worked as a journalist in anti-apartheid movements. The residency participates in a larger project, initiated by Melanie Boehi at the BAB, which invites artists and researchers to work on and intervene in this archive, towards a future exhibition or publication. Lubinsky will also participate in the European Conference on African Studies at the end of June while she is in Basel.
