Sixte Paluku Kakinda

05 - 26 March 2017 — SDC

Lubumbashi  native Kakinda will be in Johannesburg to  work towards the development of a graphic novel inspired by the dense complexity of Yeoville, an inner city suburb of Johannesburg.

“My Island called Ekhaya is a graphic novel inspired by Yeoville, a suburb of Johannesburg, reserved for and by jews before to become a property of all, a pan-africanism and multicultural space.  An island, a home for all the people from around Africa, in searching of a space of life in the society, in a society marked by Apartheid,” says Kakinda.

The project is also inspired by the documentary One Take Grace by South African filmaker Lindiwe Matshikiza, who Kakinda is collaborating with. Her movie is a revisiting of South Africa through Grace Bapela, the main character, motivated by her dreams and aspirations, leaving her family for a better life in Johannesburg under Apartheid.

My Island called Ekhaye is also inspired by photographies of Gideon MENDEL on Yeoville.
