Visual Arts

Outgoing Visual Arts Network of South Africa (VANSA) Director, Molemo Moiloa travels to Switzerland in June in the context of her new role at the Johannesburg Contemporary Art Foundation, a new private structure, to be launched in 2019. She will be interacting with counterparts from both Switzerland and South America, in the context of our Coincidencia programme and the dense programming during the week of Art Basel and Liste. On the 15th of June, Molemo will also will form part of a panel on critical discourse convened in the context of Pro Helvetia’s Living Room project, a temporary space conceived as an open platform for discussions and encounters, which runs parallel to the Art Basel and Liste programme. We look forward to interesting possibilities for future connections and projects emerging from her densely packed itinerary.

Moiloa, who  lives in Johannesburg, has both a BA Fine Arts (cum laude) and MA Social Anthropology (cum laude) degree from WITS. Her academic work has most recently focused on the political subjectivities of South African youth, and in 2013 she was awarded the John Blacking Prize for her Anthropology Masters Dissertation in this area. She is one half of the artist collaborative MADEYOULOOK, recently nominated for the  Vera List Center Prize for Art and Politics 2016/17. She was recently also a Chevening Clore Fellow 2016/17, and winner of the Vita Basadi Award for 2017.

Before her directorship at VANSA, she was Manager of Public Programmes at Market Photo Workshop, sessional lecturer in Social Anthropology department at the University of the Witwatersrand, and worked in a freelance capacity on a wide range of creative initiatives.
