Mitchell Messina

July – September | Basel — Visual Arts
Cape Town based artist Mitchell Gilbert Messina will be in Basel, Switzerland, on a 3 month residency with Atelier Mondial. Messina adopts a playful yet at the same time insistent stance in his work and arrives in Switzerland in the wake of Go Away Mitchell a solo exhibition at Stevenson Cape Town. Of his residency, he says:
“I have no specific sense of the work I want to make, but I promise that I will make work, and I’ll make a lot of work, and some of it will be good. I mean this quite sincerely. My work relies on being responsive, it needs some sort of structure to butt up against, be it show, or a project, or a residency: it needs parameters and deadlines, and me churning out jokes with deftness and urgency.”
Messina was born in 1991 and graduated from Michaelis with a BAFA in 2013. He is the art director of Adjective magazine, and lives and works in Paarl. Messina previously exhibited at Stevenson as part of the RAMP series, and in 2015 he was included in Filter Bubble, curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist and Simon Castets at the LUMA Foundation’s Westbau in Zürich.
