Matchume Zango

Switzerland | Music

September 29 – October 16 — Music

Cândido Salomão Zango, also known as “Matchume,” has dedicated himself to Mozambican traditional music and dance since the age of six. He is currently regarded as one of the new masters of the timbila. His parents and grandparents are originally from Zavala, Inhambane Province, which is the center of Mozambique’s Timbila tradition. Inspired by this long and passionate tradition of music and percussion, Matchume began to play, study music and produce traditional instruments such as timbila, mbira, xitende an djembe drums.

The aim of this residency is to explore possibilities with Chopi music in the Swiss context, deriving influences from interactions and collaborations during the residency. Chopi music evolved in the Zavala district of Inhambane and is said to date back over 500 years. Chopi music does not only involve the playing of timbila, xitende, African drums, bamboo flutes but also a rich culture of singing and dancing.

Matchume will principally collaborate with Swiss musicians Jul Dillier [keys, accordion], Matthias Abaecherli [violin, bass]  and Chris Norz [drums, percussion] for performances during the residency.

The quartet will also perform at the following venues:

06.October 2018 Chäslager, Stans NW

07.October 2018 SousSol, Luzern

13.October 2018 Fabriggli, Buchs SG

14.October 2018 Gemeindemuseum Absam (Innsbruck, AT)
