ÉdouardJacottet, 1858-1920, was a Swiss missionary who lived and worked in Lesotho for 36 years. Jacottet wrote many books including the first SeSotho grammar book, he played a pivotal role in the 1906 Conference on Sesuto Orthography, which decided on the orthography still used in Lesotho today.
Writer and researcher, Lineo Segoete, intends to trace how his formal language education in Switzerland informed his method and approach to the coding of the SeSotho language and influenced SeSotho culture.
The research process will involve engagement with Geneva-based collective Microsillons and Nora Landkammer of the Another Roadmap network as potential collaborators in the development of a graphic manual that re-imagines the orthography of the SeSotho language.
“While his body of work was impressive and still holds weight to date, surveys, interviews and evaluation I have done reveal that his authority led to complicated implications for users of the language in the present,” says Segoete.
Segoete graduated from the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology in 2012, where she majored in B (Bus) In International Business.
