May — Multi-Disciplinary

#GoldendeanIsComing

Dean Hutton has been invited on a week-long professional exchange residency in Switzerland from 13-19 May 2019 where they plan to develop connections and engage in cultural exchange with LGBTQI+ art activists and non-profit organisations in Basel, Genève and Bern. Facilitating Dean’s tour will be multi-disciplinary practitioner Marcel Schwald, whom they met whilst presenting work at Kaserne in Basel and with whom they found common creative and philosophical ground.

Dean Hutton is a genderqueer trans media artist provoking dialogue about the gaze, queer bodies, love and social justice. A.K.A. Goldendean, they have worked across photojournalism, print, digital, video and social media, performance and community action since the late 1990s. Their strategy of simple, often improvised actions by a “Fat Queer White Trans body” share moments of soft courage to affirm the right of all bodies to exist, to be celebrated and protected.

Dean explains: “I am committed to using my skills as an artist to contribute to the project of humxn dignity and social justice. My collaborative art practice looks to develop spaces that prioritise inclusive practices, and support the building of loving communities and resilient social movements. My travel to Switzerland will initiate new conversations to develop new links in the spaces between our different contexts, South African, Swiss, and in all our queer diversities.”
