August - October 2018 — Visual Arts

Swiss photographer Flurina Rothenberger will use her three-month residency in Johannesburg to collaborate with Bubblegum Club in developing a jointly produced issue Nice + Bubblegum Club print magazine. The magazine will be focused on showcasing culture in Johannesburg and telling the cities stories. Part of this collaboration will see both groups hosting a editorial production residency which will see emerging photographers invited to produce content for the magazine. Complementing the magazine project Flurina Rothenberger will explore Katlehong through both the built environment and the lived realities of particularly a group of young residents she is working with for this story.

“I’m interested in how regulations of space discipline not only the way people move within that space but also contribute to fixing the identity of an individual or often an entire community,” she says.

Rothenberger, born 1977, was raised in Zuénoula, Côte d’Ivoire. Her photographs across different African countries focus on the expanding urban landscape, often located in some of the fastest growing economies in the world, and the people that move within it. Her work is published with Edition Patrick Frey. She is is the Co-founder of Klaym an independent collective – founded in 2015 – dedicated to support, mentor and publish the work of photographers in African countries.

Rothenberger holds a degree in photography from the University of Arts Zurich and is a regular lecturer of Photography at Vevey School of Photography / CEPV and F+F School of Arts and Design Zurich.
