Choreographer Fana Tshabalala and dancer, Vladimir Ippolitov will present their collaborative dance piece Men at Dance Umbrella 2018 this March.

The two dancers met in South Africa in 2015 during the Swiss Embassy supported tour of the Geneva Ballet, and worked together at the High Five project which Pro Helvetia Johannesburg supported, as part of the Geneva Ballet’s engagement with the context.

In 2017 Fana was awarded a Pro Helvetia Johannesburg studio residency, and spent most of November in Geneva working with Vladimir on the project, which explores ideas of masculinity in modern society.

Vladimir is currently on residency in South Africa to continue work on the piece and ready it for presentation, as well as to participate in other national engagements/workshops.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Fana was born in 1987 in Sebokeng, Johannesburg. His career started through involvement with various community groups. In 2012 he joined the Forgotten Angle Theatre Collaborative in 2012, where until recently he served as company Co-Artistic Director. In 2013 Fana was the recipient of the South African Standard Bank Young Artist Award for dance,

Originally from Russia, Vladimir began his career as a ballet dancer. After graduating from the Vaganova Academy pursuing a masterful career, in 2011 he felt the call of contemporary dance and joined the great theater in Geneva.
