Dana Whabira

Founder and director of the Njelele Art Station in Harare, Zimbabwe, Dana Whabira, will participate in Plat(t)form 18 – Forum for New European Photography in Winterthur at the end of January, as well investing some time in project research and network development in Switzerland.

Whabira is a Zimbabwean artist, architect and cultural facilitator. She lives and works in Harare where she founded Njelele Art Station, an urban laboratory that focuses on contemporary, experimental and public art practice. Whabira was curator of Gwanza Month of Photography 2014 under the theme Moonwalking that exhibited works by forty-two photographers from Africa in over twenty unconventional spaces across the city centre of Harare. She took part in the Symposium D’Art Mali, initiated by Médina Mediatheque, part of the Rencontres de Bamako 2015 OFF programme. Whabira participated as a member of the awarding jury for Novo Banco Photo (2015) at Museu Colecção Berardo in Lisbon, and on the inaugural selection panel for democraSEE (2017), an award and mentorship platform of PHOTO: in Johannesburg.

An architect by training, Whabira studied art and design at Central Saint Martin’s College in London (2011). Her first solo exhibition “Suspended in Animation” was held at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe (2013) and she has participated in group shows in Johannesburg (2015), Pretoria (2015) and Harare (2012), in addition to taking up art residencies and giving talks locally and internationally. Whabira represented Zimbabwe at the 57th Venice Biennale (2017) and will participate at the Dak’art Biennale (2018).
