Andreas Tschopp, one of Switzerland’s most in-demand jazz trombone freelancers, will once again be on residency in Makhanda (Grahamstown), South Africa, where he‘ll play in a number of performances from 28 – 30 June during the 2019 Standard Bank Jazz Festival.

Born in Zurich, Switzerland, Andreas began playing the trombone at age eleven. In 2003 he graduated from the Hochschule für Musik Basel with a degree in music pedagogy and jazz trombone.Currently, he teaches jazz trombone at the Lucerne University of Arts. Andreas performs in very diverse musical constellations ranging from duo settings up to Jazz Orchestras, in Switzerland and other parts of the world. He’s a member of the Swiss Jazz Orchestra, the ensembles Hildegard lernt fliegen, Le Rex, Skyjack, Vertigo Trombone Quartet, Starch, Bamert/Tschopp Duo, Lauer Large and lots of other projects. For many of these bands he also contributes music as a composer. Andreas is also currently preparing the second release of his band Bubaran, playing jazz influenced by Indonesian gamelan music, as well as music for two new groups, a chamber jazz trio and an electroacoustic sextet.

During his residency, Andreas will play in legendary Swedish jazz musician Nils Landgren’s Funk Big Band, the award-winning ZAR Orchestra, founded and directed by Marcus Wyatt and at the popular night jam at the Jazz Cafe.

Andreas will also give workshops and masterclasses as part of the Standard Bank National Youth Jazz Festival programme.

The SAMA-award-winning seventeen-piece ZAR Jazz Orchestra, founded and directed by trumpeter Marcus Wyatt, juxtaposes the power and sensitivity of the big band format, intertwined with elements of traditional South African jazz and contemporary approaches.

Makhanda’s signature is the Big Band – a jazz genre renowned for its power and complexity. This year‘s Funk Big Band includes an all-star lineup of top South African and European musicians, led by Swedish jazz legend Nils Landgren.
