Alessandro Schiattarella

Alessandro Schiattarella was born in Napoli, Italy. He graduated in 2000 from the Rudra Béjart School, Lausanne. During the next 15 years, he worked with several internationally renowned dance companies. His last creations ALTROVE  (AEROWAVES TWENTY17’s selection),TELL ME WHERE IT IS, STRANO and ONE AT A TIME, focuses on the theme of disability under an autobiographical, cultural, social and political perspective. He developed and shared workshops about “inclusive practices” in Europe, Asia and Africa. Alessandro is currently following a Master in Fine Arts at the FHNW Basel.

For his upcoming research residency in August 2019 in Cape Town, Alessandro will continue his work along the lines of the research on ‘accessibility’ that he began during his 2016 Pro Helvetia residency. The research will continue in collaboration with Nadine McKenzie, who is the artistic director of the Unmute Dance Company. Key questions that Alessandro will be exploring with Nadine will be first, what is actually meant by ‘accessibility’ in a physical or mental form? How can anyone be an ‘accessible person’? What is an ‘accessible creative process’? What does accessibility in the ‘here and now’ stand for? What are the most effective artistic tools to inform people on ‘accessibility issues’? This research is intended to inform discussions around the base of a new choreography between Alessandro and Nadine.
