Savanna Trust: Southern African Theatre Camp & Female Playwrights Masterclass

Savanna Trust in Harare, Zimbabwe are pleased to be proceeding with the 5th edition of the annual Southern Africa Theatre Camp after last year’s edition having to be hosted online. From 15 – 26 November 2021, 13 young theatre makers and managers from various Southern African countries will undergo an intensive training on arts management, scriptwriting and directing. The camp focuses on practical skills-development, with participants given tasks to work on such as coming up with a short script or a certain policy (arts management) for their organisation/group and presenting these to the facilitators and group.
Alongside the Theatre Camp, Savanna Trust is introducing a new training programme from 13 November – 4 December 2021 that is specifically focused on female playwrights. The Female Playwrights Masterclass arose to address the lack of female playwrights in Southern Africa. Savanna Trust conceptualised a platform that brings together 8 female playwrights for mentoring by a female facilitator. The platform aims to provide a free space for the participants to be themselves without fear or intimidation. The participants will engage in intensive training for three weeks where they will learn from the facilitator and from each other about scriptwriting. At the end of the training, each participant will have written a script that is directed and performed through a reading.
