Mr MediaX: “to collaborate with creatives from another country who had completely different lived experiences”

South African multimedia artist and art director Mr MediaX received ANT Mobility support in 2017 to develop a project titled ‘IMakeAfrica’ with Zimbabwean collaborator Vuyi Chaza. The project told the stories of six Zimbabwean citizens and their contributions to society through a multimedia digital exhibition. Mr MediaX and Vuyi Chaza were two of the artists selected to take part in the 2016 Fak’ugesi Digital Africa Residency, also supported by ANT Mobility funding.
The ANT Mobility support was helpful to me as it assisted me in getting the opportunity to travel to make work in Harare, Zimbabwe. I got the opportunity to collaborate with creatives from another country who had a completely different lived experience and understanding of art and “what it is to be African” than my own. ANT Mobility funding also afforded me the opportunity to travel so that I could complete the creation of a unique art exhibition that could be experienced anywhere in the world using virtual reality technology and your mobile phone. Completing this exhibition made me a more internationally viable artist and afforded me further opportunities to travel to showcase my works in Europe and the USA, as well as evolve my craft to working with augmented reality technology.
