For their new album, Catching Bad Temper, Swiss quintet Puts Marie have created an impressionistic and inventive record that explores duality and ambiguity. This follows after the 2015 release of Masoch I – II, which was created after a three-year hiatus in which the musicians explored various side projects. Now, the band is more united than ever, exploring new horizons on this, their sixth studio album. “I find it very beautiful that we’ve all grown individually with our own tastes and desires and yet we all find each other on the same wavelength when it comes to playing together,” says singer Max Usata.
The band, who have been playing together for over fifteen years, push their sound into uncharted territories on this album. “Our main fear was to repeat ourselves or worse, to self-parody,” says Usata. Through a series of residencies in Bienne and Avignon, Puts Marie settled in Nantes to record the album in Black Box Studio, which offered analogue sound processing, live takes and tape recordings. “We wanted to play with rhythm, rap and repetitions without turning to closed loops,” Usata explains, “the finished product had to be raw and alive.”
The result celebrates a band at its peak. Wonderfully impressionistic in the way it reproduces ambiguously emotional pictures with notes steeped in an inventiveness that never breaks the coherence and efficiency of the tracks.
Puts Marie are scheduled to play a series of performances in Southern Africa on their world-wide Catching Bad Temper tour.
