Mozambican jazz saxophonist, Moreira Chonguiça will return to Cape Town for a very special one-night-only performance for Africa Day on Saturday 25 May 2019.

Moreira will play in the Norval Foundation’s Gallery 8, where Ghanaian artist, Ibrahim Mahama’s installation Labour of Many is currently being exhibited.

Moreira will be joined by fellow Mozambicans Helder Gonzaga on bass and Edna Jaime, who will be interpreting Moreira’s music through dance. Their travel is supported by an ANT Mobility Grant.

They will be accompanied on stage by Kevin Gibson on drums, Angelo Syster on guitar, Mark Fransman on keys and Ronan Skillen on tablas, percussion and didgeridoo.

Moreira will also be conducting a workshop for Music Exchange on Saturday 25 May 2019 from 10h30 – 12h30 at Paul Bothner’s Plumstead where young musicians will get a chance to listen to him discuss the music business.

Moreira Chonguiça is feted as one of the finest exponents of innovative and original jazz from Africa. As an independent artist with seven award-winning, globally informed and celebrated albums – he is blazing a trail from his east-African roots to the world. Exposed to and inspired by the likes of Miles Davis, Fela Kuti, Percy Sledge and Manu Dibango, Moreira’s energetic contemporary rhythmic compositions have garnered applause across all six continents.

Edna Jaime is a Mozambican dancer and choreographer. She started dancing at the age of 12 and became a professional dancer at the age of 17. Her dance pieces are regularly part of Mozambique cultural events and she has regularly taken part competitions and collaborations with artists from the continent and Europe. This will be the first collaboration between Moreira and Edna.

Upcoming maintenance work

The application portal myprohelvetia will be updated from 1.1.-7.1.2024. Due to these changes, open applications must be finalized and submitted via the current online portal (myprohelvetia.ch) by the latest 23:59 on 31 December 2023. Until this date, the deadlines and criteria outlined in the current guidelines and calls for applications apply. New applications can be created and submitted in the application portal as of 8 January 2024.
