Being and Becoming: Gender Politics, Race and Identity in the Creative Space

In a continued conversation of the 2016 exhibition, Being and Becoming: Complexities of the African Identity, !Kauru Contemporary African Art Project’s 2017 Africa Month Exhibition, it will delve into the complexities of what has come to be understood as African femininities and female narratives emanating from contemporary African and African diasporic experiences.
The highly successful Being and Becoming: Complexities of the African Identity exhibition examined the material and conceptual complexities of the African identity with themes interrogating race, gender, class, access, intersectionality, transformation and transcendence. This year, with a focus on female identified and identifying artists and specifically on female narratives and perspectives, !Kauru Contemporary African Art Project presents Being Her(e), an exhibition of women, by women featuring the works of 13 female artists and curated by Refilwe Nkomo (SA) and Thato Mogotsi (SA).
