Modjadji, a theatre production directed by Carla Fonseca and Mandla Mbothwe, is play inspired by the enigma of the Rain Queen who has formed a fundamental part of South African culture, mythology and history. In collaboration with Spoek Mathambo, Iman Isaacs, Richard September, Indalo Stofile and TJ Ngoma, the play promises to transform anyone within the space.
The contemporary play, performed in isiXhosa, English and Afrikaans, weaves together a restless spiritual world and a society in a desperate state of emergency. The only retribution and salvation hangs on the grace of the Rain Queen.
The production stitches between the private and the public, from real to surreal, from intimate to theatrical, from impalpable to tangible. It moulds a mystical world by incorporating exceptional dance, music and performances.
