The Festival d’Avignon is offering a seminar from 16 to 24 July 2017 aimed at up-and-coming artists involved in the performing arts, with a focus on theatre.  Twelve young artists from several countries will be selected and given the chance to participate in a full programme of discovery and encounters centred on contemporary artistic expression as presented at the Festival.

Launched in 2013 in partnership with Pro Helvetia, the Swiss Arts Council, the aim of the Séminaire en Avignon is to provide a younger generation of stage professionals with a platform for in-depth exchanges on both a practical and theoretical level.  The programme will give participants the opportunity to share in the discovery of a range of performances of different kinds, to meet European and international practitioners and to take part in debates with some of the Festival’s guest artists, critics and theoreticians in the area of the performing arts.

The opportunity is open to theatre and dance practitioners up to the age of 35: directors, actors, performers, choreographers and set designers working professionally on an on-going basis in their own country or in professional contexts elsewhere.  As most of the events are in French, it is essential that seminar participants should have a good command of the language, in addition to English.

The candidate selection is made by partner institutions in collaboration with Pro Helvetia and Festival d’Avignon.  Selected African candidates’ participation is covered by Pro Helvetia Johannesburg.  This includes costs of participation in the seminar, travel and visa costs, accommodation, per diem, and reservation of seats for performances.  Festival d’Avignon undertakes to draw up a programme of performances, meetings and discussions.
